Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Sergey Khachatryan won First Prize at the VIII International Jean Sibelius Competition in Helsinki in 2000, becoming the youngest ever winner in the history of the competition. In 2005 he claimed First
Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
his 2023/24 season Sergey’s international presence is sustained by performances with Dresdner Philharmonie (Emmanuel Tjeknavorian), Korean National Symphony Orchestra (Oksana Lyniv), Ulster Orchestra (Daniele Rustioni), Orchestre National de Belgique (Michael Schønwandt), Queensland Symphony (Otto Tausk), Auckland Philharmonia (Chloé van Soeterstède), Bochumer Symphoniker (Kahchun Wong), and two major tours: an extended Spanish tour with the Basque National Orchestra (Euskadiko Orchestra) conducted by Stanislav Kochanovsky and a North American Tour with the Armenian National Philharmonic – among the destinations are Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, Maison Symphonique in Montreal, and Carnegie Hall in New York.
In 2024 the Naïve Recording Company has released a CD of Ysaye՛ Six Solo
Sonatas with the performance of Sergey Khachatryan.
In 22/23 season Sergey’s international presence is sustained by performances with Dresdner Philharmonie (Cristian Măcelaru), SWR Symphonieorchester (Michael Sanderling), Strasbourg Philharmonic and Milano Orchestra Verdi (Stanislav Kochanovsky), Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia (Andrew Litton), Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra (Vassily Petrenko), Bilbao Symphony Orchestra (Tarmo Peltokoski), DRP Saarbrücken (Pietari Inkinen) and Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo (Juraj Valčuha). The highlight of this season will be Sergey’s residency with Orquesta de Valencia, comprising of several concerts conducted by Alexander Liebreich including a chamber project, where Sergey will perform Bach’s famed Double Violin Concerto.
In 2020/21 season Sergey Khachatryan performed a number of livestreamed
performances including Brahms violin concerto with the Netherlands Radio
Philharmonic and Cristian Măcelaru, Shostakovich 1 st violin concerto with
Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI and Kazuki Yamada, Beethoven violin
concerto with Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Olari Elts, Prokofiev
2 nd violin concerto with Orchestre National de France and Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
Recital performances included a video production produced by BOZAR in
Brussels of Beethoven and Babajanian violin sonatas with Sergey’s trusted duo partner, his sister Lusine Khachatryan. Highlights of the pre-pandemic season included Sergey’s residency at the BOZAR in Brussels, comprising of a pair of recitals and concert with Orchestre National de Belgique and Hugo Wolff. He also performed with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic with Stanislav Kochanovsky, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and Gulbenkian Orchestra with Lorenzo Viotti, Bamberger Symphoniker with Ludovic Morlot and Rotterdam Philharmonic with Valery Gergiev, as well as at the Teatro
alla Scala Milan under Myung-Whun Chung. Sergey also embarked on a tour of the US and Europe with Alisa Weilierstein and Inon Barnatan with a programme titled ‘Transfigured Nights’ featuring music of Beethoven, Schoenberg and Shostakovich.
In recent seasons, Sergey has performed with the Südwestrundfunk
Symphonieorchester (Christoph Eschenbach), Bamberger Symphoniker (Herbert Blomstedt and Jonathan Nott), Münchner Philharmoniker (James Gaffigan), Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Juraj Valčuha), Mariinsky Orchestra (Valery Gergiev) and Orchestre de Paris (Andris Nelsons and Gianandrea Noseda). He has also collaborated with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebou Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Belgique, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, RAI Torino, NHK and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
The 2017/18 season saw Sergey’s debuts at the Aspen Festival in Colorado, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with the Hamburger Symphoniker and at the Salzburger Festspiele performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Re-invitations included the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell & Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Rotterdam and Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestras, St Petersburg Philharmonic, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Other recent projects included a tour of Japan with the Nippon Foundation and in 2014/15 Sergey performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto at the Lucerne Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel as the latest recipient of the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award.
Sergey plays the 1740 Ysaye Guarneri violin on kind loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.
