Lucius A. Hemmer, born in 1965, grew up in Hannover and was encouraged to play music from an early age. He first studied bassoon with Prof. Klaus Thunemann in Hanover and later conducting with Prof. Luis Biava in Philadelphia, USA and in Munich with Sergiu Celibidache. He attended conducting courses with one of the most internationally successful teachers, Ilya Musin, and received further important inspiration from Valerie Gergiev.
He was the director of the “Camerata Academica Munich” for many years, and later took over the “Munich Chamber Symphony” and the “Philharmonie of the 21st Century”. He has also conducted the “Virtuosi di Praga”, the “SHMF Chamber Philharmonic”, the “Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra”, the “Temple Symphony”, the “Philharmonie of Nations”, the “Czech Chamber Philharmonic” and the “Philharmonia Hungarica”. International guest performances have taken him to Japan, Russia, the USA and almost all European countries. In China he has conducted a large number of different orchestras, sometimes repeatedly. These include the “Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra”, the “Wuhan Philharmonic”, the “Tinajin Symphony Orchestra” and the “Hunan Symphony” in Changsha, the Shaanxi Symphony Orchestra in Xi’an and the Chengdu Symphony. In Korea he conducted the “Insiem Philharmonic” and in the Czech Republic the Hradec Kralove Philharmonic and the local Pueri Auri Boys’ Choir as well as the “Karlsbad Symphony Orchestra”. In Egypt he was invited to conduct the “Cairo Symphony Orchestra” (Egypt).
As an artist, Lucius Hemmer has worked with world stars such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir George Solti and Valery Gergiev, performed with soloists such as Justus Frantz and performed with Christoph Eschenbach at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. He was also a lecturer at the Munich University of Music and currently teaches at the Nuremberg University of Music.
He premiered several works by Helmut W. Erdmann and by Reger’s student Wilhelm Rettich, among others. In addition to this, he has recorded several times for radio and CD and has appeared in many television programs on the Second German Television and on 3Sat.
Lucius A. Hemmer is a prizewinner and sponsorship award winner of several competitions, a scholarship holder of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Institute for the Promotion of Gifted Students and, after various positions, works as a music manager in addition to his work as a conductor. He has been the artistic director of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra since 2003. He has also been a lecturer at the Nuremberg University of Music for 10 years. He was appointed honorary professor there in 2019.
