Czech bass Jan Martiník has garnered several prestigious awards throughout his career, most notably winning the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize in 2009.
For almost a decade, Jan has been a principal soloist with the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden), Germany’s oldest opera house. Audiences have admired his performances in roles such as Sacristan (Puccini: Tosca), Dr. Kolenatý (Janáček: The Makropulos Affair), Zuniga (Bizet: Carmen), Voice of the Oracle (Mozart: Idomeneo), Daland(Wagner: The Flying Dutchman), and Innkeeper (Eötvös: Sleepless), among others. Beyond Staatsoper, he frequently collaborates with Komische Oper Berlin, the National Theatre in Prague, and the Vienna Volksoper, amongst other notable stages.
He regularly performs with leading global orchestras, including the Czech Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, and Staatskapelle Dresden.
Conductors of the highest caliber regularly invite him for collaborations, having sung under the batons of Daniel Barenboim, Jiří Bělohlávek, Semyon Bychkov, Manfred Honeck, Michael Sanderling, Jakub Hrůša, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, among others.
Jan’s recording portfolio is equally impressive. His recent release of Schubert’s Winterreise (Supraphon) received five Diapasons. Additionally, he recorded Dvořák’s Biblical Songs with the Czech Philharmonic under Jiří Bělohlávek(2020, Decca). In collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle, he performed the dual role of Priest/Badger in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, a recording that was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2020.
