Orchestra

The Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra (APO) is an orchestra based in Yerevan, Armenia. It has always been considered as one of the leading orchestras of the former Soviet Union. Established 85 years ago by Arshak Adamian and Alexander Spendiaryan it is the national center of professional orchestral music in Armenia. The APO performs concerts at its residence - Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall - one of the architectural pearls of Yerevan designed by Alexander Tamanian and hosts audience of 1300 seats.

Being led into the new millennium by Maestro Eduard Topchjan the APO is committed to promoting cultural, musical awareness in local audience regularly performing classical and operatic music in addition to national and contemporary music.

Soloists

Famous Armenian soloists appear with the APO, such as Sergei Babayan, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Sergei Khachatryan, Isabel Bayrakdarian, Kim Kashkashian, Anush Nikoghosyan, Daishin Kashimoto, Anna Samuil, Kostantin Lifshitz, Sergei Nakariakov, Julia Fischer, Diemut Poppen, Alexander Chaushian and many others.

Projects

Except from the regular weekly concerts, the APO takes part in different projects, such as Gala Concert on the occasion of the 87th general meeting of AGBU, Montserrat Caballé's concert with the APO, The Premiere of ARTSVABERD Opera by Andrey Babayev in Shoushi

Artistic Director

In October 2000 Eduard Topchjan was appointed the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the APO.The outstanding Armenian conductor Eduard Topchjan studied violin at the Yerevan Conservatory and went on to study conducting with a prominent Armenian conductor Ohan Durian followed by valuable consultations from Sir George Solti, Claudio Abbado and Nello Santi.

Tours

The APO serves as Ambassador of Armenian music worldwide and tours regularly.Since 1989 the APO has toured extensively throughout the USA, Canada, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Lebanon, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Greece, Iran, Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, and UAE. The most recent tours occurred to Japan in 2009 with 15 concerts, Germany and Slovakia in 2010.

Master Classes

In the frames of Yerevan International Music annual Festival, held in autumn, internationally acclaimed soloists give masterclasses to young Armenian musicians.

The Festival was held under the High Patronage of the First Lady of Armenia- Mrs. Rita Sargsyan and is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia.
