The Armenians received the warmest welcome from the Brno audience

A week ago the audience of the Moravian Autumn festival in Brno had a chance to hear the concert of “exotic” guest orchestra – the Armenian Philharmonic with Maestro Eduard Topchjan and the young violinist from Berlin Sophia Jaffé.
The orchestra disposes with a rich sound and advanced virtuosity of the musicians, which they fully used in the music of “their” composer Aram Khachaturjan, and in the Schostakovitsch 6th Symphony as well.
In the Spartacus ballet suite the orchestra used more the deep masculine registers, which corresponded with the expressive and rhythmically explicit structure of the composition. While in the Schostakovisch symphony they created deeper contact with the audience. / It is a pity that this contact was interrupted by the inappropriate ovations between the movements…/.

The opening Adagio caught us with the typical Shostakovitsch´s meditation. The quick movements were full of instrumentation colours and expressional nuances, very well was described author’s endeavour for joy with the undertone of grotesqueness and irony. The slight nuances were perfectly performed with entirety and guided by the conductor’s functional and modest gestures, and with feeling of the conductor’s clear conception.

The highlight of the evening was the performance of the charming soloist. She cooped with the Khachaturjan´s technically demanding and large violin concerto with marvellous spontaneousness. She performed the concerto with a “male” expression and inwardness in the slow movement – in spite of the fact that the composer ´s message is more of academic and technical value, and also not very coherent.
The concert ended with standing ovations, which we can experience only after really excellent performances.
